You could be overpaying for your car insurance and not even know it. The best discount car insurance policies take some time to find, but if you know where to look, you can knock $100s off your policy.

There are different types of car insurance discounts out there. For example, Geico discounts range from driver-specific discounts to rate reductions for loyal customers. Take a look at the Allstate discounts list – you’ll find rate reductions for safe driving, good grades and vehicle equipment.

Many companies offer discount car insurance to motorists who practice safe driving habits. Some companies call this a “safe driver” or “good driver” discount and offer anywhere from 10 to 30% on most coverage policies.

The State Farm safe driver discount, for example, is offered under the Drive Safe & Save program. Motorists who elect to enroll in this program can download an app that evaluates their driving habits. At the end of the coverage period, they may receive a discount of up to 30% for practicing safe driving.

Drivers can also receive the State Farm safe driver discount if they enroll in the program using OnStar. Some vehicles are not equipped with this feature, so drivers should check before enrolling.

Other discount car insurance comes in the form of a rate reduction for completing a safe driver course or driver education. Motorists who complete these courses become less of a liability to car insurance companies, so many companies offer incentives for completing them.

For example, Geico discounts commonly include rate reductions for motorists who take and complete a state-approved driving course. Each state has different rules for what qualifies as a defensive driving course.

As such, insurance companies may offer different rate reductions for drivers in different states. Drivers in Florida can take an approved driver safety course for a 10% discount on their Geico insurance policy.

Bundling is another way to get discount car insurance and reductions on other types of policies. Many car insurance companies offer other coverage options, such as homeowners’ and renters’ insurance.
A homeowners and auto insurance bundle could help you save hundreds of dollars on the cost of both policies. This type of bundle is available from a number of insurance companies, including the following:

  • Progressive
  • State Farm
  • Allstate
  • Liberty Mutual
  • Nationwide
